The Islington area of London is famous for being where former Prime Minister Tony Blair once resided.
Current residents are an eclectic bunch and it’s a neighbourhood with its own special character. You feel as though you’re experiencing a very “real” London, far from where the tourist masses tend to congregate.
The annual Wine Show is taking place in Islington and is an essential event for anyone with a passion for wine. A host of wine aficionados are on hand to provide expert tips and excite your senses. Test your palate in the Tasting Theatre or take a Guided Wine Walk if you prefer.
NOTE: if you are reading this article in 2010, the Wine Show 2010 is taking place on 12th November at a different venue in Olympia.
The 2009 event takes place at the Business Design Centre on lively Upper Street (22-25 October). Full details are on the official Wine Show website.
Which are the best hotels for convenient access to the Wine Show, not to mention the area’s many good restaurants and bars?
Here is the London Hotels Insight shortlist of the highest-rated hotels in and around Islington:
- Hilton London Islington. This is not the top-rated hotel in the area (though service is efficient and it almost makes the TripAdvisor top 100). But it is certainly the most conveniently-located hotel for the Wine Show. Try to get a good deal using our meta search tool. You might also want to consider another of London’s best Hiltons.
- The Hoxton Hotel. This arts-y “luxury budget” hotel has already been featured on our blog as one of London’s top 20 TripAdvisor hotels with occasional £1 room sales. It’s a couple of miles from the Wine Show so you may need to hop on a bus to get to and from Upper Street.
- The Andaz Hotel. This is another contemporary-style hotel mostly the preserve of corporate types. It’s currently in TripAdvisor’s top 80 hotels and handy for train and airport connections (right by Liverpool Street). We featured the “local vibe” at the Andaz in an earlier feature.
- The Zetter. This intimate boutique hotel is on Clerkenwell Road – again not in the heart of Islington. It gets rave reviews on TripAdvisor (currently in the top 50 London hotels) thanks to its quirky design, comfy beds, friendly service, free wifi, restaurant and other nice touches.
Finally, we recently featured the Stafford as an outstanding hotel for wine lovers: its 350 year old wine cellars do after all have 20,000 wines! The hotel is luxurious and comfy in an old-world, traditional English style.
Although the Stafford is a bit of a trek from the Wine Show, it makes up for this by being in the heart of the West End.
