London celebrity hotels: the Dorchester.

by Rajul on January 13, 2010

The Dorchester is probably London's most glamorous address The Dorchester is probably London’s most glamorous address

We continue our look at celebrities’ favourite hotels in London by putting the spotlight on one of the prime addresses: the Dorchester on Park Lane.

The Dorchester is an Art Deco gem of a hotel with ultra-expensive suites which has made several appearances on this blog (e.g. is it better than Claridge’s?).  This time we touch on its high density of celebrity guests.

It must be said that this old dame of a hotel is truly synonymous with the rich and famous.  To name a few (rumoured) names from many:

  • Brad Pitt (who apparently split with Jennifer Aniston at the hotel)
  • The late Michael Jackson (rumoured to have been banned at one point)
  • Mariah Carey (with a convoy of 23 suitcases for a recent short visit!)
  • Christian Bale (involved in an infamous family row when staying here)
  • Britney Spears (who reputedly asks for Marilyn Monroe movies)

In fact, the list just goes on and on…

Indeed, you’re unlikely to avoid spotting an A-lister at the Dorchester, drawn by its swanky public areas, posh restaurants and traditional design.

They’ll usually stay in one of the suites (e.g. The Harlequin Suite, one of London’s 4 most expensive rooms) and enjoy the hotel’s renowned spa.

Is it good enough for mere mortals?

The Dorchester is currently just inside the top 50 on TripAdvisor so is clearly doing something right.  It certainly provides a sense of theatre.

Nevertheless, there is a “celebrity premium” in its lofty rates.  We’d advise staying there only if you feel an irresistible urge to mingle with the famous.

Rooms at the Dorchester are furnished in a luxurious, country-house style

You do sadly have to pay for WiFi which seems odd when you’re already paying a king’s ransom for the room and there are so many other good free WiFi hotels, including ultra-deluxe rivals like the Lanesborough.

Of course, staying at the Dorchester definitely provides a bit of a wow factor if having a prestigious address in London is important to you.

If however you wish to pay a bit less and still receive 5 star service, we’d also recommend the Check rates at the Milestone Hotel
