An expensive hotel in Mayfair might not be the first place you’d think to take the children when holidaying in the capital, but the Athenaeum’s innovative “Kid’s Concierge” service may make you think again.
While many hotels fail to consider the needs of those with young families and even regard the presence of children as an inconvenience, the Athenaeum welcomes them with open arms, even before check-in.
From the pre-stay questionnaire sent to ascertain such important information as favourite cartoons, video games and toys…to the free milk and cookies for supper, the hotel goes the extra mile to keep kids happy.
For a family outing in London, the location is excellent. For one thing it’s close to Hamleys toy store as we’ve previously mentioned.
While Piccadilly may not be the quietest location, this is London after all and parents with kids are seldom naive enough to seek the peace and quiet!
With Hyde Park close at hand, the hotel is perfect for long summer nights and even provides outdoor toys such as kites and footballs to keep the young ones amused. Mayfair also provides ample opportunity for sight-seeing, avoiding the need for long tube rides.
Buckingham Palace and the upmarket shops of Knightsbridge are also within easy reach, while Hyde Park Corner and Green Park underground stations are only a five minute walk away.
The Athenaeum also caters for rainy days by offering a wide-ranging DVD collection featuring the latest animated films and complimentary popcorn.
One user on TripAdvisor summed up the experience succinctly – “It may be slightly more expensive, but if you’re travelling with children, I’d be astonished if this great hotel didn’t tick all the boxes and then some.” But what really sets the hotel apart is the dedicated ‘Kids Concierge’.
As the hotel website states, “Our Kids’ Concierge will greet you when you arrive and continue to be around throughout your stay. Need a late night mercy dash for anything? Fancy a family cycle through the Royal Parks or hiring a boat on the Serpentine? They’ll sort out whatever you need.”
It’s the little things that make all the difference, such as the fact that everything in the mini-bar (excluding alcohol) is free, allowing you to ensure that the little ones have their thirst quenched.
Finally, the Athenaeum also boasts some of the nicest serviced apartments in London – ideal for harmonious family stays. The hotel currently ranks number 56 out of more than 1000 London hotels on TripAdvisor.
We listed other cheaper family hotels in London in a previous feature, including the equally family-friendly Luna & Simone Hotel near Victoria. The Luna & Simone is currently number 21 on TripAdvisor and offers free WiFi.
