Exciting innovation in London hotel breakfasts.

Breakfast has long been seen as the key meal of the day and in recognition of this fact, hotels tend not to stray too far from the tried and tested.

Morning menu choices have commonly been restricted to full-English or continental breakfast options.  But recent developments show that many top London hotels are becoming a lot more adventurous in their morning offering. Many are now really pushing the boundaries.

The Lancaster London is currently offering an indulgent breakfast feast of gargantuan proportions, featuring burritos and lobster club sandwiches.

Such indulgence is ideal for those who need more than a simple cereal and coffee to start their day!  Plus the Lancaster also tends its own bees on the roof, so your breakfast honey will probably be the freshest in London!

Others have been influenced by Japanese guests and offer a selection of breakfast choices from the Far East.  These include miso soup at the renovated Langham and tofu and noodle options in other London hotels.

Different culinary traditions are increasingly being combined with the British affection for a large hearty breakfast.  A deliciously diverse melting pot of breakfast concoctions is bubbling over to revitalise the first meal of the day.

While there is no immediate danger of eggs, bacon and beans disappearing from breakfast menus, there is growing evidence that hotel chefs and guests are becoming ever more aware of new ingredients and possibilities.

After a quick glance at the Ritz’s breakfast selection you could be forgiven for thinking you had inadvertently picked up the dinner menu.

Alongside the mainstays of croissant/juice or sausages/black pudding, you’ll find decadent delicacies like Haddock Monte Carlo with Champagne sauce.

Guests at the Carlton Tower hotel in Knightsbridge can choose traditional breakfast fare or sample a selection of compotes, luxury ham or venison off the bone, as well as a selection of fine cheeses at the Rib Room buffet.

The Cavendish Hotel in central London – featured already as London’s greenest hotel – uses locally-sourced and organic ingredients in preparing its breakfast, as confirmed when we met management there.

At the Zetter Hotel, chef Bruno Loubet serves up a lavish ‘Breakfast Bistrot’ menu.  Guests can start the day with carrot and ginger soup or grilled sourdough topped with barbecue mushrooms and Gorgonzola.

And since the Zetter is one of the most eco-friendly hotels in London, you can be assured that all ingredients are ethically sourced.

Brown’s in Mayfair – London’s oldest hotel – is getting in on the action too with dishes like fried duck egg with brown shrimps and sea purslane.  You may not have room for its sumptuous afternoon tea later in the day!

While some of the strong tastes mentioned above may be unconventional, these pioneering delicacies are forcing us to rethink our idea of what breakfast means.  Indeed, a stay in one of London’s top hotels may open your eyes and mouth to a whole new world of early-morning options.
