Best 3 London Hiltons in 2010 on TripAdvisor.

by Rajul on August 25, 2010

The Trafalgar Hotel does its best to disguise the fact that it's a Hilton - but guests currently rate it one of the brand's top 3 London hotels

Our analysis last year on London’s best Hiltons got great feedback as a tool for Hilton loyalty card holders to help them decide which hotel to choose in London (there are after all currently 22 London Hiltons to select from!).

Today, we’ll revisit this analysis to see which Hiltons are currently “top of the charts” according to TripAdvisor guest reviews for London.

Here is the current London Hilton top 3, in order of ranking:

1. Hilton London Tower Bridge

This hotel has risen substantially up the charts in the last year.

Standards are on the up and it is now knocking on the door of the elite top 10 London hotels.  One factor in its favour is the fantastic location – near Tower Bridge and ideal for exploring the South Bank’s attractions, including the London Eye, some lovely pubs and great food markets.

It has a contemporary style and rooms are good but can vary in size (you can always ask to see yours before checking in).  Rates are surprisingly reasonable given the location, especially if you book in a savvy manner.

2. Hilton Canary Wharf

This was previously the number 1 Hilton in London and is still in the top 30 London hotels on TripAdvisor.  It offers a good Hilton breakfast, friendly staff, good rates and modern facilities – a solid overall package.

Of course, it involves a slight trek to get into central London, but Canary Wharf has its own attractions including some of London’s best ice creams.  As you’d expect for a location within the heart of the city’s financial district, it’s ideal as a hotel for business.  But tourists will certainly get value here too, particularly on weekends.  It’s also handy for London City Airport.

Room rates at the modern Hilton Canary Wharf are often significantly cheaper than central London for even better-quality rooms and suites

3. The Trafalgar Hotel

Interestingly, this hotel is part of a Hilton experiment as the company’s first “non-branded” London hotel – it tries to be “boutique” rather than “chain”.

Given that Hilton is all about branding and consistent execution, this seems an odd idea but does give the hotel scope to be a little different from the conventional Hilton.  And guests so far seem to quite like it.

The Trafalgar has a more minimalist style than most Hiltons and a fabulous rooftop bar called “Vista” with great views of London.  Although it’s in the top 100 on TripAdvisor and nicely-positioned near Trafalgar Square and Covent Garden, the jury is still very much out on this experiment.

An honourable mention also goes to the Hilton Islington which we’ve featured on this blog before because it’s near some good gastro-pubs in quite a lively area.  Although it does not currently rank as highly as the above three hotels, its well-trained staff get good reviews.

In fact, if Hilton could update and renovate the product in its Islington hotel slightly, it would probably soar up the TripAdvisor rankings very quickly.

The Hilton Islington is a good choice in one of London's liveliest areas, even though some of its rooms are getting a touch dated

Finally Hilton, please stop charging so much for your hotel WiFi!  Read your TripAdvisor reviews and you’ll see it’s your guests’ number one gripe!
