London hotel bars with stunning views.

by Andrea on September 10, 2010

Vista at the Trafalgar is great for taking in an iconic London view: as long as the weather holds up!

One of my favourite things in life is a great view.

And although you could go to Parliament Hill on Hampstead Heath, you don’t necessarily have to struggle up a hill to gain access to a wonderful vista; you can also enjoy London’s best views with a drink in your hand.

The Hilton on Park Lane has a superb view from its upscale Galvin at Windows restaurant on the 28th floor.  You can see the whole of London spread out below; it’s a particularly interesting spot after dark, when you can see the London Eye and all the Thames bridges beautifully lit up.  You don’t have to dine there either – there is also a bar with a good whisky list.

“The Heights” at the Saint Georges Hotel (Langham Place) isn’t as high – only the 15th floor – but the views are terrific. Sadly, the hotel doesn’t currently do so well on TripAdvisor, but the bar is certainly worth a visit.

Both the Hilton on Park Lane and the Saint Georges Hotel have sensibly arranged for vast windows to maximise your ability to appreciate the view.

Galvin at Windows on the 28th floor of the Hilton on Park Lane is another hotel bar and restaurant which provides a fantastic perspective over London

I think my favourite “bar with a view” at the moment is the Vista bar at the Trafalgar Hotel, which gives you one of the capital’s best views with your cocktail.  It’s not as high up but the view is truly a classic one.

As an open air bar, it’s not much use in dodgy weather.  But on a sunny or clear evening, you can practically see eye to eye with Nelson on his column!

The Trafalgar also happens to be one of London’s top 3 Hiltons and has a superb location by Trafalgar Square, so it’s well worth booking in as well.

The vista from the Vista bar at the Trafalgar Hotel takes some beating

Oddly, some London hotels which should have marvellous views don’t always make the best of them. For instance, the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge is gloriously situated opposite the Houses of Parliament.  Perversely, the windows in its bar seem to have been shrunk deliberately!  It is however definitely the hotel for salsa music lovers.

Some riverside London hotels have a bar on the ground floor – giving OK views I suppose, but not the grand sweep of the Thames that you’d get from a penthouse bar.  Why don’t they make more use of their assets?

London Hotels Insight has however been assured that the new Savoy has been re-designed to make the most of its views, particularly the perspectives from its spectacular-looking new River Suites.
