“Best of British” at the Andaz’s 1901 restaurant.

I recently went for an evening meal at the 1901 restaurant in the Andaz Hotel, Liverpool Street – a venue specialising in “modern British” cuisine and the flagship eatery of a London hotel which dares to be different.

The Andaz cultivates a unique, barrier-free ambience where staff don’t have fixed job titles but are simply “hosts”.  They cram their brains with useful local information to help you make the most of your stay.

So, having already visited the hotel several times and read through the Andaz’s above average guest reviews – TripAdvisor currently ranks it in the top 30 London hotels – my expectations were pretty high.

It did not start particularly well.  We had to specifically ask for the set menu which offers superb value at £21 for 3 courses.  It should perhaps be offered proactively to all diners and not only to those in the know.

But once this slight glitch was overcome, we enjoyed great wine and food in a lovely atmosphere.  The dining room has a spectacular glass dome and a sense of “theatre” which feels more West End than East End.  Tables are well-spaced to give you maximum privacy – one of many nice touches.

You could taste that the ingredients were top-notch: my trout for example had a delectable light and flaky consistency and the corn-fed chicken main course was simple in design but beautifully prepared.

We also enjoyed a sort of beef carpaccio with melt-in-the-mouth consistency as well as an interesting amuse-bouche to start the meal.  Service throughout was friendly without being overbearing or formal.

I also appreciated that the food was not over-seasoned and that the ingredients were very much allowed to speak for themselves.

We ended with dessert, the highlight of which was an impeccably-crafted chocolate torte, which I tried in vain to steal from my dinner partner!

In my opinion, this was the best of British food: straightforward, homely and above all, exquisitely sourced.  The next time you have a visitor in London who complains about British food bring them to 1901!
