Free WiFi touchdown @ The Lanesborough.

by Rajul on December 6, 2011

We're set up to get online at The Lanesborough within minutes of arriving - exactly how any luxury traveller would expect it to be!

Today our free WiFi touchdown project moves into the uber luxury sector – where a surprising number of ultra-expensive London hotels impose sky-high extra internet charges on their guests.

The clientele at very high-end hotels can probably afford to pay the lofty surcharge.  However, the scandal here is that their expectations will often be that it’s included in the room rate (after all, so many cheaper hotels include free WiFi).  And top-end hotels typically do very little to manage this expectation during the booking process since they almost never display their WiFi charges transparently on their websites (why would they when they know such a charge is almost impossible to justify?).

The other aspect which The Lanesborough understands (along with the ultra-luxurious free WiFi Milestone Hotel which we also visited recently) is that true luxury implies that guests shouldn’t be inconvenienced unnecessarily.  And imposing WiFi charges creates a bizarre, anachronistic barrier which most modern travellers could do without.

We cheekily tweeted out the names of some luxury London hotels that don’t seem to be in tune with the needs of luxury travellers through their WiFi charges.  And we could have easily named and shamed many more.

At The Lanesborough by contrast they “get it” – which is why we were happy to spend time at this beautifully opulent hotel which combines old world elegance and hospitality with a thoroughly modern mindset!
