A view to thrill: Shangri-La at the Shard launches.

One of London’s most anticipated new luxury hotels has now opened its doors to guests for the first time, and has been drawing plenty of media coverage in its first week. Unfortunately, one of the biggest talking points surrounding the Shangri-La at the Shard has been views of an altogether different kind than those publicised from London’s tallest building.

Guests at the Shangri-La have been told to close their blinds at night, to avoid being visible to their neighbours. This, according to general manager Darren Gearing, is because of, “the unique shape of The Shard,” which results in some ceiling-floor windows acting as mirrors and reflecting from one room into another when the lights are switched on.

This particular quirk has of course left journalists scrambling for puns, with even the otherwise sensible Financial Times dubbing it the ‘Eyeful‘ tower.

The hotel has 202 rooms, with prices starting from £450 per night, and its offering is further boosted by a 125m high champagne bar. While the privacy flaw is unfortunate, it will doubtless do little to diminish the popularity of the hotel and its unique views.
