With Wimbledon in full-swing, the Tour de France impending and a cornucopia of other festivals and events taking place in the capital over the coming month, London’s boutique hotel scene is as vibrant as ever. Here we take a look at some of the biggest news to emerge over the past month, and peek ahead at what’s going on in July.

The biggest opening in June was the long-awaited Ham Yard Hotel in Soho. The hotel is Firmdale’s eighth London property, and is accompanied by an authentic ‘50s bowling alley, a theatre and a spa. The hotel itself has 91-rooms, as well as two dozen residential apartments.

From a boutique hotel with apartments to a penthouse apartment flat that is like a boutique hotel in its own right. A six-bedroom penthouse flat in Knightsbridge’s Wellington Court has recently gone on the market for a record-breaking £50,000 rent per week. The Huffington Post recently reported on its “’boutique hotel’ style bedrooms”. Also included are a gym, bar, library, study, cinema, Jacuzzi and no fewer than six garden terraces.

CNN meanwhile has been gushing about the merits of the Andre Balasz’s Chiltern Firehouse, which it has featured in its list of ‘Europe’s best new boutique hotels’. As the news site points out, the Firehouse is very much the boutique hotel of the moment for A-list Hollywood stars.

June also saw the opening of Dorsett Shepherds Bush, the first of 10 London hotels planned by Dorsett Hospitality International.

According to company president Winnie Chiu, the group plans to open hotels in the capital over three brands, including the boutique-style d.Collection and budget-orientated Silka Hotels.

We were also given another new hotel to look forward to in June, in the form of the planned Mercure-branded hotel on Talbot Square. The hotel is set to have 78 rooms and will be operated via a franchise agreement with the London Town Hotels Group. The Mercure London Hyde Park is expected to open in late 2014.

A number of London hotels have received awards at the recent Considerate Hotel of the Year awards. The Draycott Hotel took home the Considerate Marketing Award in recognition of their ‘Keen to be Green’ campaign, while the Landmark London won the award for Considerate Housekeeping Team. One Aldwych was named the Considerate Champion of the Year.

Looking ahead to autumn, details have been announced of the upcoming Independent Hotel Show to be held at Olympia London on 21st-22nd October. There are expected to be 250 exhibitors taking part at the luxury and boutique hotel event, and talks will be given by industry experts including key figures from Nadler Hotels, Ace Hotels and Mr & Mrs Smith.

Following the death of Ace Hotels founder Alex Calderwood late last year, Fast Company have taken an intriguing look at the life and work of the iconic hotelier. The illuminating feature examines the genesis of the boutique hotel brand that is now his legacy – “affordable but hip, deliberately shaggy, a refined edition of a rock star’s crash pad. The kind of place… ‘where the people we knew—DJs, artists, magazine creators, graphic designers, musicians – would want to stay.’”

Big Hospitality have been talking to one of the co-founders of The Design Agency, Anwar Mekhayech, about ‘The evolution of boutique hotel design’. “It’s really about the vibe and soul of the space from the check-in throughout all the common areas and the retain,” says Mekhayech on designing a boutique hotel. “…the rooms need to be curated and bespoke in a way that is user friendly but also fresh and innovative”.

July sees the introduction of the Andaz Liverpool Street Hotel’s new ‘Room With a View’ concept. The hotel has teamed up with local artists to provide four rooms decorated with street art. The first room, available from July 7th, has been decorated by Chris Price and Delisia Howard.

For art of a different kind, head over to Mayfair on July 5th-6th, for the first Brown’s London Art Weekend, led by Brown’s Hotel. The hotel will be offering special accommodation packages and tours around the 80 galleries and auction houses opening their doors to the public.
