The summer months are all about outside spaces – places to sit, eat, drink and even swim. We’ve taken a look at rooftop swimming pools and sheltered courtyards in London hotels, and now it’s time to put terraces in the spotlight. From suave and sophisticated rooftop bars when you can rub elbows with the stars, to cosy little terraces where you can curl up on a comfortable bench, London’s hotels have it all.
The rooftop at The Boundary is open all year round, thanks to its heaters and weatherproof pergola. As well as the bar and grill, which serves up a Mediterranean inspired menu, the rooftop is also host to a working kitchen garden and a canopy of grape vines. The rooftop gets particularly busy in fine weather and preference is given to guests at The Boundary restaurant and hotel. Whether you’re sitting for dinner or taking up one of the wicker chairs for a late-night drink among the foliage, plan to book ahead.
The classy Radio Bar at ME London offers up plush sofas on which to while a summer evening away.
A little chilly weather won’t close the terrace though, as space heaters are available and there’s even a retractable roof that can be bought out on dreary days. The view isn’t half bad either, looking out over the south of the city, where you can catch a glimpse of the likes of Big Ben.
If cigars are your thing, then the Cigar Terrace at The Montague on the Gardens is the place to be. During the summer months it’s reserved for cigar smokers only from 10pm (5pm the rest of the year). Cigar connoisseurs can experience some of the finest cigars to be had, paired with snacks and drinks specially suggested by the Cigar Terrace menu. And there are even books on cigars in the library if you feel like a little reading.
Not to worry if you don’t like cigars though, as the hotel also does al fresco dining at The Garden Grill during the summer.
A secluded terrace that overlooks the gardens of the Bedford Estate, the outdoor space is perfect for a drink or a bite to eat. As well as afternoon tea and lunch and dinner menus, you can have something from the barbecue menu, or even grab a delicious milkshake. Watch (and smell) your food being cooked as it sizzles on the grill and savour a cocktail in the summer sun. You can also book the Terrace or Garden Grill for barbecue parties, if you want something a bit more private and celebratory.
Whether you head straight for the barbecue as soon as the sun’s out, or you prefer to sip at a Pimm’s as you look out over London, there’s a hotel terrace for you somewhere in the city this summer.
