Top 5 “behind the scenes” experiences at London hotels.

by Elizabeth Hands on October 16, 2014

The Dorchester is probably London's most glamorous address

There’s a reason Downton Abbey is watched by millions. There’s something fascinating about getting a glimpse of what goes on downstairs. It’s where all the action happens. So it’s little wonder some of the capital’s top hotels have decided to let us in on some of the secrets of what goes on behind the scenes:

Kitchen parties at The Dorchester

They say the kitchen is the heart of any party. It’s where guests naturally migrate, with some of the best conversations taking place in the kitchen.

So The Dorchester has decided to open its main kitchen for private events and parties. It’s not an experience that comes cheap, costing around £22,500 for 50 guests. But for that price, guests will be able to try signature pieces from the hotel’s key restaurants as they come off the pass. Meanwhile, executive chef Henry Brosi will let you use his office as a DJ booth.

A night at the opera at The Savoy

The Savoy, one of London’s most famous hotels, has already been the subject of a documentary series. It’s perhaps understandable then that guests aren’t being invited behind-the-scenes again.

But the hotel is offering a package where you can enjoy a pre-performance tour of the Royal Opera House. The package includes a one-night stay for four people, a private dinner and backstage tour at the Royal Opera House, along with the chance to watch the ballet or the opera in a Grand Tier Box.

The Milestone for minis

Kensington’s Milestone Hotel is renowned for being child friendly, and its behind-the-scenes tour is no exception.

The hotel’s Milestone Mini Experience gives little ones the chance to go on a supervised tour of the hotel, visiting different departments and meeting the management. At the end of the tour, children are given a small task to perform to help the staff, and will then receive their own Milestone Certificate.

Mix your own at St James’s Hotel & Club

While there’s an awful lot to be said about simply sampling the cocktails made by the capital’s expert mixologists, there’s also a lot of fun to be had in making your own.

St James’s Hotel offers guests the chance to try out the job usually reserved for its bar staff. The hotel’s head mixologist Zdenek Zemen explains the history of cocktails before guiding students as they make – and taste – their own cocktails. Best of all, every cocktail comes with delectable canapés made by Michelin-starred William Drabble and his talented team.

Putting on the Ritz

The Ritz has had a brand new kitchen installed, and it wants to show it off.

The hotel has created a new experience for foodies called Epicurean Ritz. The package includes a two-night stay along with a behind-the-scenes tour of the kitchen, where guests can learn about how The Ritz’s signature dishes are created while watching the chefs at work.

Each of these packages is an incredible experience that adds something a little extra to the usual hotel stay.
