The Lancaster London shows guests the way.

As we move closer to 2015, more London hotels are shaking off their traditional image and using modern technology to revolutionise guest experiences. The most recent example can be found at the Lancaster London.

From January 2015, the hotel will be boldly going where no UK hotel has gone before (as far as we’re aware), by introducing ‘beacon technology’. This technology involves the installation of digital beacons around the property which can then interact with a corresponding app on guests’ mobile phones or tablets. These beacons have been provided by Live Group, who claim that the technology will transform the way that guests interact with venues.

So what does the technology do exactly? It seems that its main purpose at the Lancaster London, at least initially, will be to help guests find their way around the property. For example, a guest with the app installed on their phone could use it to instantly locate themselves within the building.

Or they could use it to find specific areas of the hotel – a handy feature as the Lancaster London is often used for conferences. Delegates may even be able to locate each other with the technology which would facilitate networking.

How well the technology works in practice remains to be seen, but the possibilities for the future are not limited to location functions. Beacon technology, which uses small Bluetooth transmitters, can be used to send tailored content and messages to mobile devices within range which have the corresponding app. The possibilities for personalising guests’ experiences then may soon only be limited by the imaginations of hotel planners.
