Spring is here and with it, as ever, the promise of upcoming sporting events, festivals and the inevitable surge in tourism on the streets of London. As the city’s boutique hotels prepare for the busy months ahead, we take a look at some recent news and look forward to things to come.

One of the big news stories regarding London hotels in March was that almost sixty of the capital’s hotels have been told that they must improve their food hygiene standards. Among them were popular boutique hotels like the Radisson Blu Edwardian in Covent Garden. They were included within more than 500 UK hotels that only received two stars.

It also emerged in March that London hotels are not quite the most expensive in the UK, with that title going to St Andrews, which has average room rates of £156 per night. London was some £20 behind, with average rates of £136.

GLH opened the first establishment of their new boutique brand, Every Hotels, in London last month. The Every Hotel Piccadilly was originally a Thistle.

GLH also plans to relaunch the Thistle brand in the capital, alongside another two new luxury brands, Amba and Clermont. The group’s chief executive told ThisIsMoney, “London is an extraordinary hotel market – the best in the world. It’s the most international of the major world city hubs.”

The Wellesley featured in this blog’s ‘Five of London’s most incredible hotel rooftop penthouse suites.’ The hotel’s penthouse has four bedrooms and bathrooms spread over two floors, with 5-star luxury amenities. It also has its own cigar humidor and boardroom table, making it suitable for closing those important business deals.

The K West Hotel and Spa is continuing its trend towards novelty burgers, following its Christmas Dinner Burger which was on sale over the festive season, by offering a ‘Crème Egg burger’ to celebrate the end of lent.

On sale from the end of March, the burger does not in fact contain any meat, and consists of brioche buns coated in chocolate, a melted Crème Egg playing the part of the burger patty, with strawberry jelly ketchup and a generous helping of mascarpone cream.

Red Carnation Hotels, whose boutique properties include the Milestone Hotel, the Montague on the Gardens and The Rubens at the Palace, have meanwhile offered ‘6 simple ways you can help to save the earth’ on their blog. Written by staff at the group’s Bushmans Kloof hotel in South Africa, the post celebrates WWF’s Earth Hour, which occurred around the world on March 28th. The hotel’s earth saving steps, include growing your own vegetables, saving water and electricity, and eating less meat.

London was surprisingly outed as one of the worst places in the UK and Europe for the politeness of hotel staff in March. A survey by Hotel.info placed London last in a list of 12 European capitals ranked by hotel staff friendliness and politeness. The capital also only came in 10th out of 12 cities in the UK.

Several boutique hotels featured in the Express’s ‘Top Family Friendly hotels in London’. The Melia White House Hotel is lauded for its kid-friendly treats, while the Fleming Mayfair’s ‘Fleming Frog’ collection gets a special mention.

It has been announced that two new hotels are to be built in Stratford. The Adagio Aparthotel will have 137 rooms and offer comfortable short and mid-term stays, while the Penny Brook Hotel will be a 249-bed boutique hotel. The building process will be orchestrated by Union Hanover Securities, who say that they hope to begin work by the end of the year.

Finally, boutique group Firmdale have opened 24 serviced apartments in their already established Ham Yard Hotel, Soho. The apartments are available in one, two and three-bed configurations and available for stays of 90 days plus, hence suitable for anyone who fancies an extended London break or a comfortable base for business. Apartment dwellers will have full access to the hotel’s amenities, including the restaurant, bar, spa and bowling alley.
