Heathrow hotels change hands and rebrand.

It’s easy to focus on central London hotels when you’re looking for somewhere to stay, but airport hotels play an important role too. You might not spend your whole holiday there (unless you’re a keen plane spotter) but a comfortable place to sleep before or after a long flight is essential.

Gatwick Airport recently saw the high-tech Bloc brand’s arrival, but it’s Heathrow where things are about to hot up. Two properties have just been rebranded under new owners. European chain Leonardo have nabbed the former Holiday Inn, while the Sheraton Skyline now belongs to Qatar Airways and will become the Oryx Sheraton Skyline London Heathrow.

The Leonardo property has already opened and on the surface looks like a Holiday Inn, perhaps with a bit more added colour.

Facilities include a bar, restaurant and sundeck, as well as a gym. There are 11 meeting rooms, so anyone coming to the capital for business won’t need to go far once they’re off the plane. There is also a Park, Sleep and Fly package, which secures a night’s stay and 7 days’ parking. All the rooms have free WiFi, a solid start for this brand’s first UK hotel.

The Oryx brand, which will be tacked onto the Sheraton, provides the in-flight entertainment for Qatar Airways’ flights. But they also have their name attached to the Onyx Rotana Doha near the airport in Qatar. The hotel will still be managed by Starwood Sheraton, but whether Qatar Airways will add anything other than a name change remains to be seen.

Coming soon to Heathrow, on the same road as the Leonardo and Sheraton properties, is one of Hilton’s new Moxy hotels. Only one has opened so far, in Milan, but they aim to have 150 by 2020. The Heathrow location for this young and hip chain should arrive in 2016. We wait with baited breath and wonder if other airports will see more hotel action.
