Summer is almost here, the days are getting longer and the weather is warming up. And when the sun is out, it’s the perfect time to make the most of London’s al fresco dining scene. So where are the best places for a table outdoors? Here’s our rundown of the London hotel restaurants to head to in the sunshine – most of them, aptly, called The Terrace

Amaranto at the Four Seasons Hotel

Amaranto’s Garden Terrace is the epitome of elegance.

It offers an all-too-rare alfresco spot on London’s Park Lane. The menu is modern Italian, and you can enjoy food at pretty much any time of day here. The all-day menu includes a good selection of antipasti, caviar and shellfish platters. Or you could have your dinner inside, before retiring to the terrace for a cigar, coffee or cognac in the evening sunshine.

The Terrace and Garden Grill at The Montague on the Gardens

The Montague’s garden area is one of its most popular features.

Peaceful, secluded and overlooking the gardens of the private Bedford Estate, the Garden Grill serves up delicious à la carte dishes and barbecues cooked out on the grill. Or you could try one of the naughty milkshakes, including our favourite Vanilla Lightning, with white chocolate and vanilla vodka. There are also regular cigar rolling workshops on the terrace.

The Terrace Restaurant at the Jumeirah Lowndes

Open from April through to the end of summer, The Terrace restaurant is a little oasis in the heart of exclusive Belgravia.

In May and June, the Lowndes’ executive chef Martin Gabler will host his popular barbecue masterclass on The Terrace. If your summer barbecues usually involve either undercooked or burnt meat, Gabler will reveal his culinary secrets on how to season and perfectly cook your burgers. After the class, you can enjoy your own creations and try dishes from the menu.

The Terrace at Radisson Blu Portman Hotel

Perfectly placed for shopping breaks, the Radisson Blu Portman is on the doorstep of Oxford Street.

Enjoy breakfast on The Terrace, or head out for some retail therapy before having afternoon tea in the sunshine and indulging in some people watching. The Terrace is also ideal for small, private events for up to 40 guests.

The Terrace at The Royal Horseguards Hotel

One of the prettiest places to dine in London, The Royal Horseguards’ terrace is always adorned with colourful spring flowers and there are plenty of comfy wicker sofas to relax on.

If the weather starts to get a bit chilly, you can throw one of the hotel blankets around your shoulders to keep warm, meaning you can dine late into the evening. It’s a great place to watch the sun set over the London skyline.

Angler Restaurant at South Place Hotel

One of London’s newest hotels, South Place Hotel is the brainchild of restaurateurs D&D London, who also own Quaglino’s.

So it’s little wonder there’s a strong focus on making the restaurants here truly stand out. The Angler Restaurant and Roof Terrace provides elegant food and service, with the emphasis on seafood from Britain’s seas and rivers. But while the food may focus on British ingredients, the terrace brings the feel of the Provencal countryside to the heart of London. Planted with lavender, herbs and olive trees, the west-facing terrace is an evening sun-trap.

While you may not always associate a trip to the city with making the most of the Great Outdoors, London’s outdoor restaurants are the ideal places to soak up some sunshine while enjoying fine food and a glass of crisp white wine or a cocktail. We can’t think of a better way to enjoy the British summer.
