The need to make changes to the way we interact with the planet is becoming ever more apparent. So hospitality businesses which can demonstrate their commitment to green issues can not only help to make a difference but also earn extra interest from environmentally conscious visitors.

It appears that the Novotel London Blackfriars is ahead of the curve in this area. It was recently awarded an ‘excellent’ rating for environmental performance in an assessment based on the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM). This rating places the hotel in the top 10% of new non-domestic buildings in the UK.

Factors at the recently opened hotel which led to this high rating include a system which uses heat from exhaust ventilation emissions to heat the building and generate electricity. They also use low energy lamps, refrigerators and other appliances throughout the building.

The hotel also recycles much of its waste, restricts water wastage through flow regulators, and even uses rainwater to flush its toilets.

The hotel’s high rating also highlights the success of Accor-owned Novotel’s ‘Planet 21’ environmental initiative across its 3,000+ hotels globally. The initiative seeks to create positive impacts in the day to day activities of its hotels in seven key areas: health, nature, employment, dialogue, carbon, local and innovation. Accor even shares its research freely on these issues with the rest of the industry through the Planet 21 website.

As we move further into the 21st century, environmental concerns will likely become ever more important for hotels. In part this will come from regulations imposed on them. But it will also come from the preferences of green-conscious hotel guests.
