Summer is definitely the best time for hotel pop-ups.
There are lovely ones in winter too, but in summer it’s all about cocktails, picnics and barbecues. The Marriott Park Lane has already launched its picnic-themed Roofnic with more seasonal pop-ups now following in its wake.
The latest, called the Sipping Garden, is by Le Meridien Piccadilly, in partnership with local distillery Sipsmith. Sipsmith makes gin and vodka, which are ideal for mixing up some summery cocktails.
The new pop-up has transformed the hotel’s Terrace Grill & Bar for the season, with wrought-iron chairs and tables, hand-crafted wooden benches and terracotta planters with summer blooms creating the perfect atmosphere.
As well as cocktails featuring Sipsmith’s spirits, the pop-up is also serving light plates inspired by picnics. It seems picnics are a big deal this year, with summer picnics on the menu at The Montague on the Gardens too.
At Le Meridien, you can sip on a Sipsmith Dainty Damsel, featuring Sipsmith Damson Vodka, Chapel Down English sparkling wine and lemon juice with a prune twist.
Or try a British Bellini – Sipsmith Sloe Gin, English berries, grenadine, lemon juice and Chapel Down English sparkling wine. There’s a definite focus on local suppliers and traditional British flavours but in a fun and modern way.
If you’d like some food to go with your fruity cocktails, the picnic-inspired dishes include such delights as a salmon gravlax open éclair with Sechuan pepper and dill crème fraiche, and juniper and chilli sausage rolls with a grainy mustard dip. For dessert, there’s even more gin in the form of an orange and gin sorbet, or Jude’s Sipsmith G&T Ice Cream.
There are many other London hotels you can visit this summer for a delicious cocktail, and more pop-ups are likely to appear too. With the weather warming up, what better time could there be for a cocktail and a picnic?
