Seeing a new city like a local is something a lot of travellers strive for. They want to feel at home, while at the same time experiencing something new.
It’s not an easy thing to achieve. You’ll never truly see somewhere new as a local does, even with the help of a local guide.
And though you may want to feel at home, do you want the hassle that comes with actually being at home – the washing up, for example! A home stay or rented apartment can be great, but what if you prefer hotels? You don’t have to cook or clean up after yourself in a hotel, after all.
So if you’re after an experience that’s between being at home and treating yourself to a bit of luxury, you need a homely hotel that’s willing to show you the city.A quiet neighbourhood is best, and a hotel team that can share with you the local secrets of the area is a bonus.
Here then is our curated list of London hotels that will make you feel at home…
Montagu Place Hotel
If you don’t think Montagu Place is homely now (which it is), you’ll definitely change your mind after their refurb (get a sneak peek on Facebook).
The new look will feature blues, purples, greys and other warm colours. It will be ideal for keeping you warm in autumn and winter, when you’re not busy exploring Marylebone. Montagu Place just ran a competition asking for your favourite Marylebone attractions, with suggestions flooding in on Twitter.
Watch this space for the latest on their refurb as it is gradually unveiled…
Qbic London City
Qbic London City is passionate about East London.
They make a great effort to be involved with the local community, immerse themselves in the culture and look after the environment.
They might not have the cosy feel of some other boutique hotels, but they still want you to feel right at home. They make it easier to explore the area too, with bikes you can borrow, provided by local charity Bikeworks. Their website provides three cycling routes you can enjoy to get you started.
This small hotel in Pimlico is ideal for an intimate stay in a central location.
Its warm and often shabby-chic rooms are a good combination of comfort and luxury, so you can really settle in. Their website recommends some places to visit nearby, including the Tomtom cafe and Oliveto restaurant. There are just 10 bedrooms and the neighbourhood is quiet and worthy of exploration.
If you want to see London like a local and feel right at home, head for the tucked-away hotels with fewer bedrooms. You can treat the hotel like your own and experience the neighbourhood away from the tourist traps.
