5 London hotel trends to watch out for in 2016.

by Laura on February 5, 2016

We’re more than a month into 2016, and already we’ve seen plenty of action from London’s hotels. As 2015 progressed and came to an end, we could see a number of trends emerging from the hotel sector. From budget brands to high-tech offerings, London’s hotels are constantly evolving.

Here are some of the top trends for 2016 that we’re already seeing from hotels old and new in the capital city.

Millennials at the Forefront

Millennials are a big deal in the hotel industry nowadays. They’ve got money of their own now. They might not always have a lot of it, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a lot of them.

Millennials have different expectations from the places they stay. Free WiFi is usually a top priority, and many won’t stay at a hotel that doesn’t have it. Price is an important factor too, and so is location and style. New brands such as Marriott’s Moxy and Hilton’s Canopy will soon be arriving in London to deliver a stylish experience for millennials.

Smart Hotels

Partly related to the desire to please high-tech millennials and other generations, London’s hotels are getting smart.

Smart TVs are becoming a regular feature in newly opening hotels, such as Z Hotel City and The Intercontinental London – The O2. Entertainment in rooms is an important factor that many brands are focusing on more. Outside of the bedroom, the check-in process is getting smarter too. Hotels are continuing to add automated check-in via their apps and kiosks like the ones at Hub by Premier Inn Tower Bridge.

Healthy Hotels

Many of London’s hotels are starting to focus on their guests’ wellness.

The recently opened Intercontinental at The O2 has a luxury spa and gym with swimming pool and jacuzzi, high-tech gym equipment and eight treatment rooms. And it’s not only new hotels bringing something special to their health and wellness offerings. Established hotels like Hotel Café Royal and Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park are bringing new things to the table too.

Going Green

Eco-friendly stays will continue to be a focus for many London hotels in 2016. Hotels across the city have been striving to reduce waste.

From saving water to growing seasonal vegetables, plenty of hotels want to be green for both the environment and to help save money. Last year, the London Heathrow Marriott saved on water by installing a smart dish-washing system. The new system also saves energy every day, as well as cutting down their water usage by more than 90%.

Balancing Budget and Greater Spends

Both budget stays and splashing out are key influences in 2016. Many want to experience an affordable break and are looking for a great value hotel to do it, with Tune Hotels for example offering an attractive option across the capital.

We can see both parties represented in the budget hotels continuing to crop up and in the new mid-size and luxury hotels. Plus, some hotels are beginning to ramp up their offerings of different services.

The London hotel landscape continues to change as guest priorities shift and evolve. We can’t wait to check in again at the end of the year.
