Enjoy a jaunt to a London brewery or distillery & nearby hotels.

Since gin is having its moment in the spotlight, it seems only sensible that you find out how it’s made. London has several distilleries that offer tours, and if beer is more your thing, there are brewery tours available too.

In fact, whether you like gin, whisky, beer or vodka, you can learn more about the production process at several locations around London. Check out the tours available below, maybe get in a cheeky tasting at the same time and then crash at one of our recommended hotels at the end of the day.

It’s all about gin at the moment, and the drink’s rise in popularity has given birth to several London distilleries. While there is more than one you can visit, Sipsmith Distillery was the first of its kind in London since 1820.

They produce everything from a dry gin and sloe gin to vodka and even punches. You can join a tour at their Chiswick distillery on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings, as well as some Fridays. The tour begins with a refreshing G&T while you learn a bit of gin history and how Sipsmith came to be. You’ll see how spirits are produced in the copper stills – Prudence, Patience, and Constance – and then get to taste drinks from Sipsmith’s range. Book your Sipsmith tour here.

Chiswick might be a little further west than many people would choose to stay. You won’t find a luxury 5-star hotel, but you can still get a decent 3-star, like the Best Western Chiswick Palace and Suites London.

The Sipsmith distillery is also only a few minutes from Stamford Brook tube (District Line). If you want something a bit more upmarket, take the tube a couple of stops to Hammersmith, change onto the Piccadilly line and alight at Holborn for the new gin bar at the Rosewood Hotel. It has thousands of G&T combinations for you to continue your journey of discovery.

Sipsmith made history with their gin distillery, but The London Distillery Company did it for whisky.

The company boasts the first whisky distillery in the city for over a century. Their 109 Cask is a limited edition release of just that many casks, one for each year London went without its own whisky distillery. How did anyone manage without one? You can book tours of The Cold Room by appointment, at a nifty £15 per person. Oh, and their whisky still is called Matilda. You can book a tour with The London Distillery Company here.

You’ll find The London Distillery Company in Battersea, on Parkgate Road. It will be a while before the Battersea Power Station hotels are finished, but you have other excellent options.

Walk through Battersea Park and you have Pestana Chelsea Bridge Hotel & Spa on the other side. The 4-star hotel has beautiful views, and the spa is perfect for relaxing, with a sauna, steam room and therapy treatments.

It’s not all about the distilling. If you’re more down to earth, perhaps beer is your thing. There are more London breweries than you might imagine, and a good number of them offer tours. Of course, why do a tour that lasts an hour or two when you could have an entire experience day?

If you head to Islington, you can brew your own beer at the Brewhouse and Kitchen, and even take some home.

You get breakfast to kick off and then an intro to the brewing process. This hands-on experience has you starting your own brew, before you stop for lunch (and a beer of course). When you’ve finished up the first stage of the brewing process, you can either take home a 5-litre mini-keg of beer right away or come back two weeks later for 5 litres of your very own beer. Go here to book your brewery experience day.

DoubleTree by Hilton London Islington is just a stone’s throw away from the pub and microbrewery near Angel tube station.

Continue to indulge your love for beer at Bar60, perhaps with a burger or hot dog. When you’re satisfied, fall into bed in one of the hotel’s 4-star rooms.

Go and find out how one of your favourite drinks is made, and maybe even join in. There will always be a comfortable hotel room waiting for you after.
