During the summer, when the weather is warm, you don’t always want to eat a heavy meal. Just a small plate or light snack will do, especially when it’s to soak up a few cocktails.
Some of London’s hotel bars and restaurants do delicious snacks and sharing plates that are perfect for a summer’s day. Even better if you can sit out on a terrace or alfresco and enjoy the sunshine – assuming there is any, of course.
If you’re looking for a light bite, try out some of our recommendations…
Plum and Spilt Milk at the Great Northern Hotel
The small plates selection at Plum and Spilt Milk might be small, but it’s also refined. There’s a heavy focus on seafood, which is always delightfully refreshing during the summer.
The seven dishes on the bar menu include crispy baby squid with chili, garlic, and almonds, and Argyll smoked salmon with soda bread. To avoid the fish, try the Devilled Cornish lambs kidneys on toasted soda bread, or the baked Tunworth cheese. Wash your snack down with a cocktail, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, including eight gin cocktails and 11 gin and tonics.
The Den at Mondrian
You can find The Den between the hotel’s restaurant and bar, which is sort of what it is – between a restaurant and a bar. The lounge area is somewhere to relax and hang out, with everything from breakfast to cheeseboards on offer.
The all-day menu features a number of bites and snacks, as well as a cheese selection and a charcuterie board. Bites include nuts, bread, and vegetable crisps. If you want something a little more substantial, there’s anything from a light kale and cavolo nero salad to a meaty burger and chips. It’s a great place for drink too, whether you want a cup of tea or a glass of wine.
Qbic Canteen at Qbic London City
Qbic is a young and trendy East End hotel, so naturally their restaurant/bar is young and trendy too. They refer to Qbic Canteen (which they also call QbicKitchen) as a “bar-come-casual-restaurant”.
As well as breakfast and an all-day menu, they have bar snacks ranging from hummus and pitta bread to baby back ribs and blue cheese sauce. For £16, you can make your own platter by putting four dishes together. Enjoy your food with wine or Champagne, a cocktail, beer or cider, or something hot.
If you’re just looking for a snack, there’s plenty to nibble on throughout London. Pop into almost any hotel bar and you’ll find top-notch munchies.
