If you’re looking for the best afternoon tea in London, a hotel is your best bet, according to this year’s Afternoon Tea Awards. They named a hotel as the winner in each of their four categories at last week’s ceremony.

Claridge’s, the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, Sanderson London and Grosvenor House all took home top titles from the event at Grosvenor House. Best Traditional Afternoon Tea went, perhaps not unsurprisingly, to Claridge’s, while the Mandarin Oriental snagged Best Contemporary Afternoon Tea. Sanderson London snapped up Best Themed Afternoon Tea for their Mad Hatters Tea Party.

Grosvenor House hosted the awards, which are sponsored by AfternoonTea.co.uk, and also managed to win one. The Marriott hotel took home Best Family Friendly Afternoon Tea.

Park Room serves a Grover’s Children’s Tea, featuring such miniature delights as a Victoria cupcake, double chocolate brownie and classic knickerbocker glory. There is even a menu of children’s teas, which includes Apple Strudel, Tropical Delight, and Rooibos Tiramisu. Kids also get to take home their very own Grover – the hotel’s bulldog mascot.

An independent team judged the awards which were presented by Martha Collison, who is the youngest Great British Bake Off contestant to have ever been on the show. As well as the top four awards, they also handed out Commended and Highly Commended certificates to 25 different venues.

These also included several hotels, such as The Langham, The Milestone and Conrad St James, which all receieved Highly Commended recognitions. Establishments including The Landmark, One Aldwych, and The Ritz were all given commendations.

Afternoon tea at Claridge’s was deemed “an exceptional experience”.

At the Mandarin Oriental, the judges focused on the atmosphere and helpfulness of the staff, commenting on the “lovely ambience and “attentive and thoughtful” team. They were “surprised and enchanted” by the Alice in Wonderland inspired Mad Hatters Tea at the Sanderson, while the afternoon tea selection at Grosvenor House was “cleverly designed”.

If you missed the awards, there’s more fun to come with Afternoon Tea Week in August. Celebrate the British tradition from the 8th to the 14th of August 2016 by having tea at one of the award-winning venues or checking out one of our favourites. Use the hashtag #afternoonteaweek on social media to find out more and share your experiences.
