Back in 2014, Dorsett Hospitality International opened their first London hotel, the Dorsett Shepherds Bush. They also revealed their expansion plans for the city, including a second hotel which will open next year.
Dorsett City comes to Aldgate in the first quarter of 2017, assuming there are no hiccups. It is currently under development in a 13-storey building, formerly called The Matrix, next to Aldgate tube station.
The hotel is right by St Botolph Church, a Grade I listed building.
The original building, once an office, has been redeveloped. The new hotel will have 275 rooms, two restaurants, a bar, and 1600 square feet of meeting space. The hotel is being built by Willmott Dixon, partnering with architects Dexter Moren. The “topping out” of the building, when the builders reached the highest point, was celebrated in July.
Winnie Chiu, President and Executive Director of Dorsett Hospitality International said, “We consider the UK to be one of the most popular destinations for tourists and business travellers around the world.
Major European countries, including the UK, are attracting an unprecedented number of Chinese arrivals and the opening of a second hotel in London will continue to capture this key market for Dorsett, in line with our ongoing business strategy.”
John Connolly, Head of UK Development for Dorsett Hospitality International said of the project, “Given the architectural sensitivity of this historic and typically dense area of London, The Matrix is indeed a landmark building; both figuratively as well as architecturally; and we are indeed honoured and grateful to the local community and The City of London Corporation for granting us the approval to proceed with our re-development plan.”
Dorsett City, London is set to open in early 2017. However, when planning permission was first acquired it was pitched to be completed at the end of 2015. Hopefully, the project is on track to meet its new deadline.
