Experience a “virtual bartender” at London Edition.

by Laura on October 10, 2016

Hotels in London are always coming up with unique experiences for guests. The latest at the London Edition is an in-room “virtual bartender”.

Just the name is enough to make you curious. However, it’s not exactly as it sounds. Though it seems like it could be some sort of robot bartender, in reality you the guest are the bartender! The virtual bartender is really a virtual cocktail class.

The hotel’s 12 suites are equipped with drinks trolleys featuring a book and a collection of fixings for cocktails. When the book is opened, it plays a class featuring David Piper, the global ambassador for Hendrick’s gin. Piper guides the guest through instructions to make two different cocktails, both signature drinks at London Edition.

The two drinks the virtual class teaches are Inspector Gimlet and Caught by the Fizz, both created by Davide Segat, the hotel’s bar manager. The Inspector Gimlet contains gin and Riesling cordial.

The virtual experience has been dubbed H.O.T.E.L. – Hendrick’s Ocular Tool for Extraordinary Libations. Its aim is to be a surprising experience for hotel guests, allowing them to make a cocktail from the comfort of their room. They could go home with a new skill – or at least the ability to make two cocktails. The experience is available until further notice.

Gin is a big deal at the moment, which means that big names like Hendrick’s are competing with new, boutique gin makers. Anything they can do to make themselves stand out encourages people to remain faithful to old favourites, as well as trying new things.

Of course, there’s always the option to order room service. But where’s the fun in that when you can make your own cocktail?
