2017 marks the 20th anniversary of the publishing of the first Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (or Sorcerer’s Stone, as it is known in the US).
To celebrate the occasion, there will be events around London exploring the phenomenon of the Boy Who Lived. If you’re a Potterhead, you don’t want to miss out on some of these fun and fascinating things to do this year.
St Pancras Renaissance Hotel
The London Book Fair celebrates literature across the city, and this year has events focusing on Harry Potter and the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death. This year it runs from March 13th to 19th.
The St Pancras Renaissance will be hosting a “very special” Harry Potter screening. The hotel’s neo-Gothic facade was used in exterior shots in the films.
There’ll be free popcorn and themed cocktails at the event – and dressing up is encouraged. Get your tickets for March 19th from 7pm.
The British Library has planned a new exhibition centred around Harry Potter, which begins this autumn.
The library is collaborating with publishing house Bloomsbury to launch a magical exhibition at the end of October. They will be showcasing the library’s collections to explore magic and wizardry. There will be unseen material from Bloomsbury and J.K. Rowling’s archives too.
Warner Bros. Studio Tour Events
There aren’t many places more appropriate to celebrate Harry Potter than at the official studio tour.
As well as their regular tours, they have special events throughout the year. Until March 30th, you can enjoy Directing Dobby, when you can get a closer look at everyone’s favourite house-elf. Then there’s Wizarding Wardrobes from July 21st to September 4th, showcasing costumes from the movies.
In the autumn, Dark Arts views the darker side of the Potterverse. Finally, from November 18th carrying on to February 2018, Hogwarts in the Snow will turn everything festive in a spectacularly grand way.
Whether you’re in Gryffindor or Hufflepuff, you’ll love these ways to enjoy a Harry Potter experience for the 20th anniversary.
