The Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park is currently undergoing renovations. To ensure the hotel still looks attractive while work is ongoing, they put up a huge mural by legendary British pop art artist Peter Blake.
It’s now your chance to become the owner of that work or suggest somewhere it could bring most pleasure to others. A competition is allowing anyone to suggest what should happen to the mural now, either in its current state as a single artwork or perhaps to make some new items.
The competition runners suggest creating fragments to be signed and auctioned or reusing the material to make something like tote bags.
The only rule is that any profit made from the artwork’s new purpose must be donated to charity.
Another catch is that it’s up to the winner to carry out their idea and take care of any associated costs. So whatever you suggest, it needs to be something you can afford to do yourself, or perhaps something you can get someone else to pay for if it’s going to benefit a lot of people.
The competition is being run by the hotel and their creative agency, LONDON Advertising. The mural comes down in May, and entrants around the world have until April 21st 2017 (17.00 GMT) to get their ideas in. You have just 100 words to describe your idea.
The huge artwork measures 65 metres wide and 24 metres tall. Titled ‘Our Fans’, it features famous fans of the hotel, from Judi Dench to Morgan Freeman.
It also features the Beatles, whose Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover was also designed by Sir Peter Blake. The 50th anniversary of the album coincides with the competition.
Peter Blake will be one of the four judges choosing the best idea for the mural. Entrants can send their ideas to firstname.lastname@example.org. Find the full terms and conditions on Mandarin Oriental’s website.
