If you fancy a stay on the high seas (river or canal) in London, you currently have a couple of options. There’s the Sunborn London, and Bert’s Barges. In September, London will get another hotel in the form of the Good Hotel Amsterdam, soon to be the Good Hotel London.
The hotel is currently moored on Amsterdam’s North Sea Canal. It will soon set sail for the UK, arriving at the Royal Victoria Docks in autumn.
The Good Hotel was once a floating jail, built to house illegal immigrants. It has now become something else entirely with social enterprise at its heart.
All profits from the hotel are funneled back into its training programme, which aims to recruit people who are long-term unemployed. There is a focus on local and fair trade suppliers at the hotel, and staff are encouraged to socialise with the guests. You won’t find a phone or television in your room, but you can borrow an iPad for your stay.
The hotel’s stints in Amsterdam and London were originally planned as pop-ups to promote a version that will open in Guatemala. Founder and chief executive Martin Dresen owns an NGO there, where he has set up two schools. The hotel will open in the city of Antigua in July 2016, with further locations possibly opening in the next few years.
Dresen aims to create jobs for the people whose education he has made possible. The hotel will be in a former private mansion and opens July 15th. The Amsterdam/London hotel will eventually get a permanent home in Amsterdam, in a former electricity plant.
The Good Hotel is available for stays in Amsterdam until June 27th. It arrives in London in September, with facilities open to local residents.
They include the Living Room, serving food and drink, with free WiFi and working space, a rooftop garden with a cafe and terrace, meeting rooms, spa, and a gym with classes. Like in Amsterdam, the hotel will use local produce and work with businesses in the neighbourhood. It won’t be the only floating hotel at the Royal Victoria Docks, with Sunborn London providing competition.
Check out the hotel’s website to learn more. Watch out too for another floating pop-up with a Dutch connection coming soon to the Regent’s Canal. The Hoxton is setting up Hox on the Locks to celebrate the first anniversary of The Hoxton Amsterdam and you could win a stay on it.
