InterContinental to open its second London hotel.
36 years have passed since the first InterContinental London hotel opened on Park Lane but the city will soon get its second – a long time coming for this global brand. The new hotel is set to open in November in the heart of Westminster in a historic former government building (Queen Anne’s Chambers) which has undergone an extensive refurbishment.
The hotel will have 256 rooms, 7 meeting rooms, the Blue Boar Smokehouse and Bar serving classic British dishes, Emmeline’s serving cocktails and a lobby lounge for afternoon tea. There will also be a gym and business centre but the really great news is that WiFi is free throughout the hotel – hooray! That’s one up on big rival Hilton.
This is particularly good news since even the InterContinental on Park Lane doesn’t offer free WiFi – are times finally changing? We hope so here at LHI where we’ve been campaigning for free WiFi for ages. But given that InterContinental is all about brand consistency, how can they offer free WiFi in one of their London hotels and not in the other? Answers on a postcard please (or preferably from InterContinental Hotels Group directly!).

The bedrooms will come in three different types; deluxe, standard and suite. All rooms come with tea and coffee making facilities, free morning newspaper and up-to-date technology which includes a media hub so that guests can connect phones and laptops to the HD TVs.
InterContinental on Park Lane also offers free access to the Barclays Cycle Hire Scheme, so it would be interesting to see if this is also a trend that continues across the entire hotel chain.
The new hotel will be minutes from Westminster Abbey, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament which makes it perfect for tourists wanting to explore those sites or for MPs – let’s just hope the latter don’t go claiming expenses for nights in the expensive suites!
