W London hotel opening now delayed to 2011.

by Rajul on August 4, 2010

The W London: currently more a builders' hotel than a boutique hotel!

We were shocked to hear via our friends at Hotel Chatter that the much-anticipated W London has delayed its opening to next year.

It has been put back to February 2011 – quite a postponement when you consider that as recently as a few weeks ago they were still insisting the hotel would meet its summer 2010 opening target.  They had even started taking bookings on their website and put up a nice flashy video.

Why did it take the people behind the W so long to bite the bullet?  Anyone who wanders around the secret wine bars near Leicester Square as often as us would have seen that the hotel’s construction site is looking far from finished: as W London’s own Facebook photo collection clearly confirms.

In the meantime, we imagine local competitors like the TripAdvisor top 10 Sofitel St James, the stylish Soho Hotel (have you tried its Refuel bar?) and value-for-money Dean Street Townhouse are rubbing their hands in glee.

Better late than never perhaps.  W Hotels have now cleverly set their opening date to a memorable February 14th or Valentine’s Day 2011.  We sincerely hope it’s worth the wait to “feel the love” as they put it!

In fact, you can already book your Valentine’s stay there using the London Hotels Insight Best Deal Finder (we checked and a double room for the hotel’s first night at the time of writing costs a hefty £329 plus taxes):

But maybe we should look on the bright side.  The project still has some way to go if it is to match the perpetual delays of the refurbished Savoy, which will now finally open its expensive doors on 10th October this year!

Just what is it with major hotel launches in London that makes it so hard for them to open on time?  Please don’t blame it on the London weather!
