The Athenaeum “granny nannies” are hired!

The Athenaeum's interview panel to hire its "Granny Nannies" included two children and tv presenter Lynda Bellingham
London hotels do like to carve out their own niche – for example, the Stafford is the wine-lover’s favourite London hotel, the Cavendish is London’s greenest hotel and the Langham currently the best hotel for afternoon tea. Not to forget the May Fair Hotel for celebrity spotting.
But there are few hotels with a niche as firmly established as the Athenaeum near Green Park – perhaps London’s best hotel for families. Kids love the hotel for various reasons, not least its free minibar soft drinks, the Kid’s Concierge service and the spacious family suites and apartments.
The Athenaeum even organises an itinerary for your children’s London stay and strives to provide their favourite drinks, snacks, toys and magazines whenever possible. It’s not surprising then that at some times of the year, up to one quarter of the Athenaeum’s guests are children!

To further cement its family appeal, the hotel has now finally hired the first batch of “granny nannies” we reported it was looking for a few weeks ago.
The panel which interviewed the candidates included a 12 year old and a 6 year old asked questions as rigorous as “How would you persuade me to go to bed?” and “How fast can you run?”.
Three fabulous nannies – Angela, Andrea and Deborah – survived this grilling and will be responsible for looking after children in the evenings and weekends so that their parents can enjoy a romantic evening in London.

It’s great to see a hotel recognising that children deserve to be treated like individuals too – when they are all too often treated as though they are invisible, particularly in some top-end establishments. As the hotel’s General Manager – Julian Critchard – puts it, taking care of children “…helps parents relax and thoroughly enjoy their stay with us too!”
