W London turns pages with (W)riters’ Library.

by Jules on June 29, 2011

One of the funkiest new London hotels, the W London, has gone a little sensible on us and created a (W)riters’ Library.  The hotel is usually in the press because of the celebrities who drink in its bar.

This time however it has used its connections for serious purposes and asked 10 writers to choose 100 books for the hotel’s new library.

The curator of the (W)riters’ Library, Damian Barr – a journalist and playwright – invited ten of his favourite writers from both sides of the Atlantic to each choose ten books which reflect their personal taste and mean something to them.

Inside each of their chosen titles they’ve included a handwritten intro, explaining why they love a particular book, why it resonates with them and other idiosyncrasies such as who they were in love with or what they wore on the day they fell in love with the book – short stories in their own right.

The funky W London is a magnet for the fashion-conscious

Located on the first floor of the hotel, the library is open to W London guests and members of the public.  The ten authors in The (W)riters’ Library are: Bret Easton Ellis, David Nicholls, Hephzibah Anderson, Geoff Dyer, Ned Beauman, Alex Preston, Naomi Alderman, Sloane Crosley, Jake Arnott and Craig Taylor.  Between them, they have chosen 100 books from classics to graphic novels, including Warhol, Fleming, Fitzgerald, Dr Suess and Atwood.

The (W)riters’ Library is the first of its kind and unique to the W London hotel which is located in Leicester Square.  A library in Leicester Square?  Who would have thought it!

And if you’re a film buff rather than a book worm then you’ll love that the W London is also one of the few London hotels with a private cinema.
