Charing Cross Hotel gives its bar a facelift.

by Jules on July 18, 2011

The four star Charing Cross Hotel by Guoman has given its bar a complete facelift and a new name that even the staff don’t know about apparently!

The new bar is named Eleanor’s after Eleanor’s Cross, the statue outside the hotel which is in full view of the bar’s window.  I went along to check out the finished project but when I asked the reception staff and the concierge, nobody seemed to have heard of Eleanor’s Bar which made me think I could be in the wrong place.  However I proceeded to “the hotel bar” and found that at least the bar staff did know the name!

The decor isn’t the only thing which has been revamped - the bar’s food and drink offerings have been given quite a shake up too.

The cocktail list features a varied selection including the speciality “Eleanor’s Castilian Sangria” which  pays homage to Eleanor’s Spanish roots.  The cocktail is a twist on the traditional version and combines red wine and Brandy infused for two days with cinnamon, mint, a blend of seasonal fruits and fresh orange.  The sangria is served from a large jar and priced at just under £14 for two to share - which certainly isn’t bad as you get more than one glass each.

The venue’s decor is a mixture of blacks, reds and greys which come to life when the sun goes down as the whole area is lit by candles creating a relaxed, informal atmosphere.  The bar menu features a selection of smaller dishes and main meals.  The battered cod and chips served with fresh mushy peas and tartar sauce is a good option and the food is reasonably priced at around £15 for a main meal.  There is also a nice selection of after dinner drinks - the espresso martini was my personal favourite.

Service is good and the location, right next to Charing Cross station, makes it an attractive stop-off for both tourists and Londoners.  It may just need a little time to establish itself and join the list of the best London hotel bars.

London’s great railway hotels are at last starting to get their act together!
