Happy Birthday to… London’s hotels!

by Holly on September 26, 2011

Several leading London hotels are coming of age in 2011 and celebrating their birthdays with considerable panache

By strange coincidence, it seems that 2011 is the year of the Big Birthday for London’s hotels.  Join in the party at these favourites…

Happy 20th to The Halkin

This month marks the 20th birthday of The Halkin and it’s celebrating with a series of events showcasing the ‘Home From Home’ ethic that it has always been proud of.  Until 30th November, you can enjoy the pop-up ‘Culture Lounge’ in The Halkin’s bar showcasing the most iconic coffee table books from art publisher ASSOULINE.  It’s open both to guests and non-residents.  Literary events with the authors are also planned.

Guests can also enjoy the hotel’s three new anniversary suites, which have been newly renovated and now include large spacious balconies overlooking the hotel gardens.  Choose from special Families, Shoppers and Gastronomes’ packages to make the most of London during your stay.  Find out more about The Halkin’s 20th here.

Happy 40th to the Capital Hotel

At 40 years of age, the Capital Hotel is one of London’s few family-run 5 star hotels and continues to be run by the family that built it.  It’s also treating itself to a little makeover this year, as any sensible 40 year old would, by bringing all 49 of its bedrooms up-to-date while retaining their classic English designs.

You can also celebrate by enjoying the Capital Restaurant’s special degustation menu, with dish highlights drawn from the previous four decades.  Or alternatively raise a glass in the hotel bar with its anniversary menu of retro cocktails from the 1970s and a special choice of wines and spirits of the 1971 vintage.  Find out more about Capital Hotel’s 40th here.

Happy 50th to the Jumeirah Carlton Tower

The Jumeirah Carlton Tower is looking fabulous at fifty.  The momentous event was marked back in June with a party celebrating 1960s glamour – the decade in which it first opened its doors – but you can still get involved in the celebrations on your stay throughout the rest of the year.

They’re serving up a specially designed ‘1961’ cocktail in Gilt Cocktail Lounge, The Chinoiserie and The Rib Room Restaurant (currently closed for refurbishment – well, we all need a little help at 50…); you can also buy a bottle of Pommery champagne for just £50 in Gilt; and the hotel has published a commemorative coffee table book, All That Life Can Afford.

Happy 80th to The Dorchester

It’s the whopping 80th Birthday of London landmark The Dorchester in 2011.  And they’ve been celebrating it in the only way an icon can – with lashings of alcohol.  Very rock star!  The Grill is currently offering 80 of their favourite wines and champagnes for the special price of £80 per bottle, plus they’ve reintroduced the 1930s cocktail ‘Dorchester of London’ in the bar.

If you prefer your celebrations a little bit more sober, there’s also the 80th anniversary afternoon tea, featuring an exclusive Ceylon tea blend.  And last but not least, the hotel has also collaborated with Trees for Cities by planting 80 ‘Future Great Trees’ in London.
