New restaurant opens at Jumeirah Lowndes Hotel.
With all of these new hotels popping up for the Olympics it’s only natural that the older hotels need to come up with fresh ideas and stories to keep up with the competition. The Jumeirah Lowndes Hotel in Belgravia is doing just that, having completely refurbished the hotel’s restaurant. The Lowndes Bar & Kitchen (formerly the Mimosa Restaurant and Bar) reopened in September and we went along to sample the food last week.
Inside, it has a relaxed atmosphere with booths and comfy chairs; or if the weather permits, diners can opt to eat on the heated terrace which is great for people watching as the hotel is just down the road from Harrods.

The new menu created by Head Chef Martin Gabler features a selection of modern British dishes; starters include Smoked Salmon, Scallops and Soup.
We dined on the scallops with cauliflower pureé and saffron mayonnaise which were small juicy scallops served on a bed of puree in their shells.
Mains range from the classic London Pride fish & chips and burgers, to the more sophisticated oven-roasted duck breast and pan-fried sea bass fillet. We sampled the chicken tikka masala – a generous portion of tender chicken served with rice, naan and raita; as well as the breaded lemon sole with sautéed tiger prawns in a white cream sauce and a side of vegetables.

For dessert we tried the warm, soft-centred choccie pudding which melted on impact and was rich and sweet, just as it should be. The bar also has a new cocktail and wine list, as well as various afternoon tea options including a chocolate afternoon tea served with chocolate chip scones, chocolate cheesecake and strawberries in chocolate sauce. Heaven!

If you fancy trying out the new restaurant, it may be fun to combine a visit with a stay in the hotel, which is currently offering 3 nights for the price of 2 (valid until 31 March 2012). Rooms start from £170 per night.
Competition is certainly burgeoning in the London hotel restaurant scene.
