No more “members only” at the Met Bar…

by Jules on October 27, 2011

The iconic members-only bar at the Metropolitan London hotel, which was once the favourite hangout of 90s celebs such as the Gallaghers, has re-opened following a complete refurbishment.  Not only have the bar’s interiors and food and drink menus been given a facelift, the doors have now opened to the general public so no membership card is needed!

We guess this move is a result of the healthy competition that has recently intensified between the best London hotel bars.

The “new” Met Bar re-opened on 6th October after closing for 3 months, during which time the old interior was sold at auction for £5000 to let former members recreate the bar in their own homes.  The proceeds were donated to the “Teens Unite – Fighting Cancer” charity.

The cocktail menu at the new Met Bar has been completely revamped

Features of the new Met Bar include a lava-stone bar top, plum and butterscotch banquettes and chairs and back-painted glass tables.  When the evening begins the glass windows turn frosted so that the original motto “What happens in the Met Bar stays in the Met Bar” is very much still in place.  And for those still looking for the privacy of a members only bar there is a raised private booth beside the staircase with views through to the main bar area, so that you can see but not be seen.

The new drinks menu offers a large wine list, vintage champagne by the glass and a host of cocktails with something for everyone.  These range from well-known cocktails to slightly more adventurous concoctions.  The signature collection looks especially intriguing - we particularly like the sound of  ‘Storm in a Teacup’- Tanqueray Gin shaken with Aperol, Orgeat, Cacao and fresh lime, served in an antique teacup and accompanied by a homemade Turkish delight.  Sounds absolutely yummy.

The new food menu is based around British dishes with starters of potted shrimps, ham hock and beetroot salad.  Main courses include monkfish, kedgeree cakes, fresh vegetable salad and Dedham Dale beef and stilton pie with sloe gin gravy.  Quite a change from the low calorie afternoon teas which the bar used to serve.  There is however also a small plates menu for those with a smaller appetite featuring a selection of snacks including Scotch egg, Cornish crab cakes and cured meats.

The Met Bar is open from Tuesday to Saturday (9am – 2am) and Sunday to Monday (9am – Midnight).  Those who want to extend their stay can book one of the 150 hotel rooms above with rates starting from £229 per night.
