Free WiFi touchdown @ The Chesterfield Mayfair.

by Timea on November 30, 2011

We conducted our free WiFi test from the homely Terrace Bar at the Chesterfield Mayfair - complete with decorations in a hotel that's fully in the swing of the festivities!

Having visited the Mercer Street Hotel and The Milestone already, the third hotel of our tour of free WiFi London hotels as part of our touchdown campaign is The Chesterfield Mayfair - a luxury boutique hotel in Mayfair.

It’s interesting that it’s luxury hotels with the most guest-friendly culture (which understand how people live today) that offer free WiFi – and we began our day by getting our laptops connected in a few short minutes.

This is how it should be at all luxury hotels in the 21st century!  Guests shouldn’t need to work out if they’ll get access, how much it will cost, if it will be fast/slow, etc…they should just be able to hook up and go.

We were up and running with coffees and WiFi at the Chesterfield Mayfair in about 3 minutes flat...it's clearly a hotel that prides itself on respecting it's guests' time

No wonder then that the Chesterfield Mayfair was the only Mayfair hotel to win an AA Inspector’s Choice Award last year (several more expensive hotels in nearby Park Lane charge guests exorbitant rates for WiFi) and also serves one of the best-value afternoon teas in London.

The hotel’s staff pride themselves on their ability to offer exceptional service down to the tiniest detail in an elegant and hospitable atmosphere.  The hotel is currently fully embracing the Christmas spirit which made it feel even more cosy and welcoming during our visit.

As we entered the hotel, the air was rich with the scent of pine and Christmas spices originating from the two beautiful Christmas trees set up in the lobby and the entrance of the restaurant; plus, there was also a cute little colourful gingerbread house – the hotel’s General Manager later informed us that this meticulously-crafted creation is an annual tradition.

The signature red carnation flowers are a recurring theme in both the decor and the staff uniform, while the furnishings are replete with the individual touches that reflect the care and attention which the group’s owner, Bea Tollman, personally invests in every Red Carnation hotel.

All this makes the atmosphere more in keeping with a grand home rather than a hotel.  We had a quick tour and were struck by how varied the rooms were - returning guests often specify their personal favourite.

If you want “cookie cutter” we’d recommend that you stay elsewhere!

Traditional comfort and up-to-date technology co-exist in perfect harmony at the Chesterfield Mayfair

During our tour we also spoke to some of the hotel’s staff who told us that they gather data on guest preferences in all sorts of areas: their favourite room/colour, ideal temperature, preferred music, regular drinks, etc. to make sure they tailor individual stays around individual needs.

Each room at the hotel was different in terms of atmosphere, colour theme, art, design and furnishings – but all radiated a certain elegance and charm.  Many have recently been refurbished with brand new furniture and technology – for example, the flatscreen TVs come with keyboard to allow you to browse the internet in your room on the TV- free of charge of course.

The hotel’s restaurant Butler’s has recently gone the extra mile by hiring Britain’s only tea poet (Elizabeth Darcy-Jones) for guests to enjoy each month, as was recently reviewed on this blog.

The tea poet at the Chesterfield Mayfair adds a bit of colour and spontaneity to the hotel's already exquisite afternoon tea experience

There is even a private “library” for guests offering interesting books and privacy as well as the essential free WiFi that can be used everywhere in the building.  It felt to us like a proper Mayfair private club!

The Chesterfield Mayfair proves that a hotel can be a thoroughbred which oozes elegance and class, while also providing state-of-the-art technology and free WiFi seamlessly.  We’re very glad we visited!
