Review of L’Albufera at Meliá White House.

by Jules on December 23, 2011

Having heard great things about L’Albufera, the Spanish restaurant located in the Meliá White House Hotel I was keen to try it.  I recently did just that and am happy to say it lives up to its reputation.

The restaurant is on the ground floor of the 4 star deluxe hotel.  Stepping inside feels like you are stepping back in time to the glamorous 60s, from the staff uniforms to the drink trolley, and the way the waiters pull your chair out every time you leave and return to the table.  This level of service makes you feel like the only guest in the restaurant even when it’s full.  There is a good selection of wines on offer with something for all budgets.  I sampled the Gran Vina Sol which was a Spanish Chardonnay with oak tones.

As you can see the tapas are a little on the small side!

The food menu is mainly Spanish with a few twists on traditional dishes and features a healthy selection without being too large.  Once seated the waiter brought over the aperitif trolley and we selected a rose Cava served with complimentary olives and warm bread rolls.  Before the starters arrived we were served a small teaser from the chef which consisted of a juicy lobster tail balanced on a disc of rice with an ink sauce.

For starters we opted for a selection of tapas which usually means small dishes but these tapas are huge!  The highlights were the mountain of 5J Jabugo ham with tomato bread, Prawns sautéed with garlic, parsley and red chilli and the Spanish omelette.

The 24 hour slow roasted pork - need I say more?

For mains the slow-roasted suckling pig with roast potatoes was a generous portion of tasty meat which fell to tender pieces and was served on a bed of crunchy crackling.  Roast garlic hake was another great dish, cooked to perfection and presented so well it was almost a shame to eat it.

Lemon mouse....almost too good to eat, almost!

The large portions made choosing a dessert easy as we opted for the two lightest dishes; a lemon mouse and Mojito which consisted of brown rum parfait, mint sorbet and lime foam.  A great end to a faultless meal, L’Albufera is one of the best London hotel restaurants I’ve sampled. With portions like this you’ll be glad of the hotel rooms above!
