Free WiFi touchdown: 14 hotels in a month!

According to a survey of 53,000 travellers, free WiFi is the most desired hotel amenity and a make-it or break-it factor in bookings - why then do so many expensive hotels charge extra for it? London Hotels Insight recently took its campaign on the road...
Over a period of a month, London Hotels Insight bloggers personally visited a massive 14 free WiFi London hotels (chronologically listed below) for the Free WiFi touchdown - an initiative designed to promote London’s best free WiFi hotels through the most popular social media channels; while naming and shaming some of the naughty luxury hotels that charge their guests extra for internet use without making this clear before you book.
Click on each title below to read our live posts blogged on-location as we tested free WiFi during each of our London hotel visits. And read our twin blog post documenting the best #freeWiFi tweets from this campaign.
We took hundreds of our own photos at all the hotels visited and will continue to promote them on social media – for example through our London Hotels Insight Flickr account. Consumers have a right to know where they can safely stay without being fleeced for extra WiFi charges, having already paid handsome luxury hotel room rates.

We’ll continue to encourage guests to choose hotels like the ones above that offer complimentary WiFi. To make this even easier, we’ve also created a Squidoo lens listing the best free WiFi London hotels – all London Hotels Insight approved (any free WiFi London hotels missing from this lens can contact us and we’ll do our best to add them promptly).
We had to do a ton of research to compile this list (often having to make phone calls to hotels) – since hotels that charge extra for WiFi often do their utmost to conceal this fact. We also recommend Hotel Chatter’s excellent resource on where to find free hotel WiFi in London.
We will continue to make use of all the social media channels at our disposal to positively promote free WiFi London hotels and thereby isolate the ones that have failed to catch up with this basic 21st century amenity.
Here are some of the channels we are using to broadcast the message:
- Blogging Platforms: WordPress, Squidoo and Tumblr
- Social Media: Twitter (using the #FreeWiFi hashtag) and Facebook
- Social Media Bookmarking Sites: Stumble Upon, Delicious
- Online PR Sites: PRlog, PR Web, TravPr and others
- Hospitality Sites (which hotel executives read): HospitalityNet, eHotelier, 4Hoteliers, Cornell, etc.
- Flickr (we’re uploading photos of free WiFi London hotels – or at least those which transparently state their charges before guests book)
- The world’s top travel bloggers, many of whom are personally supporting our campaign.
As Hotel Chatter said in a tweet about our campaign: London hotels that charge for WiFi had better watch out! We won’t relent in identifying the dinosaur luxury hoteliers who charge extra for WiFi (when even budget hotels like Travelodge and Premier Inn are now getting the message)…do watch this space and also check the London Hotels Insight twitter feed and the #FreeWiFi hashtag. Thanks for supporting our campaign!
