St Ermin’s Hotel ticks all but one of the boxes.

by Jules on April 9, 2012

The 4 star St Ermin’s Hotel is located just minutes away from Westminster Cathedral and the Houses of Parliament.  Built on the site of a former 15th century chapel, the hotel is steeped in history: it is of course the hotel which Winston Churchill used for his special ops executive meetings during World War Two – and the hotel still has a bit of a spy fetish!

The hotel is currently in the final stages of a multi-million pound makeover, which has seen it completely transformed.  It’s hard to believe the scenic front garden and terrace lined with trees and flowers was once just a car park.  The lobby inside is just as elegant with a central staircase which has been used in many films, original chandeliers which have been restored to look as good as new, marble floors, huge designer sofas, a small library and a selection of quirky artwork lining the walls.

I recently spent the night in one of the Deluxe King Suites located on the 5th floor with views out over the street – you could just about see Big Ben from it.  Half the suite was a bright lounge, flooded with light from the large bay windows, and had a two seat sofa, two arm chairs, a dining table for 6,  a plasma screen TV and a BOSE surround sound cinema system.

The bedroom came with a two poster King sized bed, another plasma TV and a couple of insects on the bed – edible insects that is!  The hotel is home to 75,000 Buckfast bees and as a reference to the resident insects they place a chocolate bee on everyone’s bed during the turn-down service.  Not only did they look quirky, they tasted pretty good too!

The suite’s bathroom was on the large side to say the least, with two sinks, a roll-top bath, digital shower, White Company products and the all important fluffy white robes.

Foodwise the Caxton Grill and Bar serves modern European dishes including a selection of steaks cooked on the Josper Grill.  Breakfast is also served in the Caxton and offers the usual continental buffet with an additional choice of hot items cooked to order from a menu.

Lovely toiletries from The White Company

The hotel has 331 rooms in total, a selection of which are family rooms that contain two double beds and two bathrooms – a rarity in London.  In fact, during my stay I noticed lots of families in the hotel, all well behaved of course!  As London hotels go, this one gets nearly everything right… if they could just get rid of the WiFi charges (£12 for 24 hours) it could be perfect!
