Shisha, music & BBQ fun at 51 Buckingham Gate.

by Jules on May 31, 2011

"Courtyard at 51" is the latest attempt by a luxury London hotel to give its guests a taste of the best of an English summer (minus the rain hopefully!)

Summer is finally here which means lots of London hotels are taking advantage of the glorious weather and going alfresco.  First The Goring recently announced it was to build a Caribbean beach bar.

Next the Montague on the Gardens – which arguably has the best-value London hotel afternoon tea – decided to celebrate its idyllic summer setting by launching al fresco dining to coincide with London Barbecue Week.

Don’t these hotels know about the notoriously fickle London weather?

Now it’s the turn of 51 Buckingham Gate, which has transformed the hotel’s historic Shakespearan-Victorian garden into an outdoor space showcasing cocktails, dining and live music.  From the photograph you can see how magical the setting is with twinkle lights, water fountain, flowers and shrubs covered only by the stars – tres romantique!

Courtyard at 51 opened in May and features an all-day BBQ with a selection of Moroccan, Turkish and American grills including Djaj Shwa, Kuzu Shish and Sizzling Fajitas.  More unusual are the shisha waterpipes complete with “shisha-tenders” to teach you how to inhale the smoke properly.

To put in the pipes, there will be a large variety of fruit flavoured tobacco on offer and to drink a signature garden cocktail created by Tanqueray no.10 who are sponsoring the temporary feature.  The venue also has a discreetly hidden fine cigars, champagne and cognac terrace.

Over the course of the summer months, the courtyard is open for lunch and dinner 7 days a week.  It will also host 12 special nights of live music and gourmet dining throughout July and August before it closes in September. Performances this year will be from Viva Live Music, Soprano Bella and Cantabile, The London Quartet.  Tickets are priced from £75.00 which includes a three course dinner and a signature 51 cocktail.

If you fancy something cheaper there are a few “standing only” tickets where you can watch from the terrace bar for £10.00 per person.
